Turn on the taps in Jabi Tehnan (part 2)

We’re in the final stages of our latest project in Ethiopia…find out how we plan to complete it, with your help.

Since 2018, all funds raised through UK Coffee Week have supported Project Waterfall’s work in the Jabi Tehnan district of Ethiopia where 38% of people rely on coffee for work.

Spotlight on Ethiopia – the birthplace of coffee.

Ethiopia is considered the biological and cultural home of coffee. Coffee farming alone provides a livelihood for approximately 15 million Ethiopians (16% of the population). Coffee provides Ethiopia with its most important agricultural commodity, contributing one quarter of its total export earnings.

Ethiopia is unique among the world’s coffee producing countries in that around 50% of the coffee it produces stays within the domestic market, for consumption by Ethiopians. Coffee drinking is not just part of everyday life, but is also deeply embedded within Ethiopian culture. Apart from the well-known Ethiopian coffee ceremony, coffee is used at major events such as marriage and birth, regional-specific celebrations, and as a medium to build and sustain relationships between family, friends and community. What’s next for our project?

Over the next 6 months, our delivery partners WaterAid will:

  • Finish work on a well and reservoir to complete a fully integrated water supply system in Mankusa Abdogoma, delivering clean water to more than 5,000 people.

  • Train community members and government staff to use the Community Score Card; a tool for planning, monitoring and evaluating their new service.

  • Put in place accountability mechanisms for the water supply service providers and the community, ready for the project handover.

How you can help

We now need to raise that final £15,000 (or even more!) to complete this project. Every penny goes straight to Project Waterfall’s work on the ground.

In return Project Waterfall has caffeine-fuelled rewards and experiences starting from £10. Visit the Crowdfunder to find out more #TurnontheTaps in Jabi Tehnan, Ethiopia.
